Sword Staff

Chapter 20: Building a Campaign Emergently

Emergent campaign building from ripples and consequences.

Sword Staff has no required long arc. The campaign emerges from what the Contractors do, fail to do, betray, save, steal, ignore, and survive.

Core Principle

Every significant decision creates a ripple. Ask after each session:

  • Who was helped?
  • Who was hurt?
  • Who escaped?
  • What was abandoned?
  • What was stolen?
  • Who heard about it?
  • What got worse while the party rested?

The Big Bad Emerges

The main antagonist should usually emerge from campaign history: someone wronged, empowered, ignored, or created by the party's choices.

By session 10, the Foreman should be able to identify several growing threads. One or more may become the long arc.

Foreman Prep Between Sessions

Focus prep on:

  1. What changed because of last session?
  2. What consequences are approaching?
  3. What new contracts reflect those changes?
  4. Which ongoing threats advance?

Prepare situations, not outcomes.
